Pavee Point Launch ‘Travelling Through the Generations’

As
part of the Bealtaine Festival on 8th of May, Pavee Point launched a
booklet titled ‘Travelling through the Generations’.  It was launched by Micheál
Ó Muircheartaigh, Gaelic games commentator, who was also present at the showcase
of the project in the European Commission offices in 2012

On the day,
Micheál spoke about the book signifying a step towards the beginning of
Travellers documenting their history, which so far has remained largely absent.
In the foreword of the book he notes; “I enjoyed the experience [of the
showcase] greatly. Pride in culture was very evident and that applied to the
young as well as the ‘older’ folk present.

At the launch, members of the
Traveller community Michael Collins and Shelia Reilly explained the process of
constructing their own family tree, which with the knowledge of Shelia alone
goes back eight generations.  Older Travellers also took over the stage to sing
songs that they learned many years ago.
