SAFE Ireland have launched MAN UP, an inspiring, brave, new awareness campaign to help make Ireland a safer place for women and children.
For the first time, MAN UP switches the focus in a domestic violence campaign from the needs and views of survivors – mostly women and children – to the actions and words of those who control or abuse women and children – mostly men. MAN UP is being launched in conjunction with the release of SAFE Ireland’s comprehensive annual statistics for 2011 (click here to view). The statistics are horrific and continue a consistent climb upwards in the numbers of women and children looking for support from their services.
Nearly 8,000 women and over 3,000 children received support from SAFE Ireland domestic violence services in 2011. That’s an increase of 56% in the number of women looking for safety since comprehensive records were first compiled in 2007 and represents a 15% increase in numbers since 2010 alone.
